Sermon Series: Hebrews: Rediscovering Jesus

Rev. Dr. Brian Ebel

Scripture: Hebrews 2:1-17

Big Idea: God offers us a road map for life in Jesus who descended to us and ascended with us to become the hero of every one of us outlaws.

Key Points:

1. The love of God is so great that he becomes lesser, so we can become greater.

Hebrews 2:5-8

For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control.

2. Jesus descends to know our life, and ascends so we can know his life.

The Descent + Ascent of Jesus Slide

But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.
Hebrews 2:9-10

3. God wants to be the hero of every outlaw. Every outlaw wants to be in charge of his or her own road map. The struggle is this: will we trust him and let it be his road map, not our own?

Application Questions

  • What “road map(s)” have you been following lately?
  • Who owns or is leading you on your journey?
  • In what ways is God calling you to surrender the right to be in control of the journey?
  • How will you surrender to him through practices of submission + self-denial?

Call to Action

This week, spend some time in prayer each morning. Ask God to do three things…

1. Take this heart O God,…I give you access to my life, my hopes + dreams, my brokenness + struggles. I surrender and submit to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

2. Take the daily situations that create fear in my life. You have access to strengthen me – may you give me grace + trust to know your way is better than mine.

3. Take the road map of my life. You have access to lead me – may you give me strength to follow.
