Sermon Series: Hebrews: Rediscovering Jesus

Teacher: Rev. Dr. Brian Ebel

Scripture: Hebrews 4:14-5:10

Big Idea: Jesus, our MEGA High Priest, is the lifeline to God.

Key Points:

1. Lifeline people stand in the gap for us as an extension of God’s grace.
In the ancient world, the lifeline for the people was the priest.

2. Why did 36,000 priests exist in the time of the Old Testament?
Because God wanted to throw us a lifeline.

3. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:14-16

Jesus is our lifeline to God. We can draw near to him in our weakness with confidence.

Application Questions

  • What “decision fatigue” is plaguing your life right now?
  • In what ways is all the activity hardening your heart toward God?
  • How will you listen for God’s voice + respond with the faith of a son or daughter of God?

Call to Action

1. This week, begin your mornings by reading Psalm 110, a psalm describing how both the role of the priest and the king will be present in the person of the Messiah – Jesus.

2. Remember throughout the day that our MEGA High Priest knows your struggles as being fully human, is your lifeline to the Father and Holy Spirit as our Great High Priest, and is King and ruler of all as fully God. Whatever your needs, struggles, or fears are – Jesus has been there and understands.

3. Choose one day to fast. It might be part of the day, a whole day, or a choice to fast eating only simple food such as bread and water. Dedicate your fast to something you long to overcome in your life – a fear, struggle, weakness, health need, unconfessed or repetitive sin, desire for freedom from your past, etc. When you are tempted to break the fast and eat, seek Jesus CONFIDENTLY for help, and ask for renewed strength.
