Hebrews, Week 6: What Did Jesus Do? Made One Final Sacrifice

Sermon Series: Hebrews: Rediscovering Jesus
Teacher: Rev. Dr. Brian Ebel
Scripture: Hebrews 10:1-18
Big Idea: When Jesus died on the cross…he sat down; there was no further sacrifice to be made.
1.) We make sacrifices every day. The principle of sacrifice in the ancient world was about the exchange of the life force of one living thing to uphold the life force of another living thing. Think: Blood for the blessing.
2.) The Hebrew system of sacrifice might be thought of in four parts…
1. The Daily Offering
2. The Five Kinds of Offerings
3. The Offerings at Festivals Throughout the Year
4. The Day of Atonement
3.) The struggle of the sacrificial system: It never changed anyone’s heart.
And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. Hebrews 10:11
4.) If your legs are tired…it’s time to give God your agenda.
But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. Hebrews 10:12
