Hebrews: Week 1 – Who is Jesus? More than an Angel

Sermon Series: Hebrews: Rediscovering Jesus
Rev. Dr. Brian Ebel
Hebrews: Who is Jesus? More Than an Angel
Hebrews 1:1-14
Big Idea: Jesus is not just a messenger or a piece of our lives, He is the full revelation of God, the One who holds everything together, and the pattern upon which we build our lives.
Key Points:
1. Jesus is the Full and Final Revelation of God
“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…” (Hebrews 1:1-2)
- The Hebrews struggled with how Jesus fit into their faith, believing that God had stopped speaking after the prophets.
- The author of Hebrews declares that Jesus is not just another messenger, He IS THE message.
- Are we listening to God’s voice, or are we looking elsewhere for direction?
2. Jesus is Not Just a Piece of the Puzzle—He is the Box Lid
“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.” (Hebrews 1:3)
- We often try to fit Jesus into the different aspects of our lives, marriage, work, finances, like just another piece of the puzzle.
- But Jesus is not a piece, He is the full picture that makes sense of everything else.
- If Jesus is not the center of your life, what have you been trying to build around instead?
3. Jesus is Greater Than Angels, Greater Than Any Other Authority
“Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” (Hebrews 1:13)
- The Hebrews were tempted to elevate angels and other spiritual figures, but the writer of Hebrews reminds them that Jesus alone is Lord.
- Today, we do the same: chasing after quick fixes, self-help strategies, and distractions instead of submitting to Christ’s authority.
- Where in your life are you looking for guidance outside of Jesus?
Application Questions:
- Do you see Jesus as central to your life, or just another piece to fit in?
- How often do you seek wisdom from God’s Word instead of quick solutions from social media or self-help?
- What would it look like for Jesus to truly be the pattern of your life, rather than just an add-on?
Call to Action:
Stop looking for scattered pieces to solve your life’s puzzle…look to Jesus, the full picture. He is not just part of your life; He is the One who holds it all together. Seek Him first, and everything else will fall into place.
