Join us for the third week of Advent and of the teaching series, Joy, as Pastor Matt Penny teaches from Luke 1:46-56 about the Joy of God’s Power.

Big Idea

Through Mary’s song, we see that the joy of God’s power comes when we stop trying to control everything and instead open our hands to receive God’s justice, mercy, and strength.

Key Points

1. Mary magnifies God because He sees and lifts the lowly.

“God has looked with favor on the lowly state of his servant” (Luke 1:48).

2. God’s mercy brings a reversal of fortune.

3. God’s power is for those who stop trying to save themselves.

4. Mary’s song proclaims that God’s promises are being fulfilled.

5. True power comes through surrender and not striving.

Application Questions

  1. In what ways am I grasping for control or power in my life right now?
  2. Where do I feel weak or overwhelmed and how might God be inviting me to stop striving and receive His power instead?
  3. How can I open my hands and pray, like Mary, “Let it be to me according to your word” this week?
  4. Am I magnifying God with my life or still clinging to pride, fear, or control?
  5. Who around me needs to know that God sees the lowly and lifts them up?
