Follow Me: Week 2 | Matt Penny
Jesus meets us where we are, not with judgment, but with mercy and invites us into deeper relationship. Like Simon Peter, we are often skeptical or indifferent until Jesus steps into our world in a way we can understand. When we truly encounter his grace, everything changes. We move from “depart from me” to “I will follow you.”
Key Points:
Jesus comes close—even when we’re indifferent.
Simon Peter had likely heard of Jesus but wasn’t fully committed. Still, Jesus stepped into his boat, into his workday, and showed up in his language—fishing. That’s what Jesus does. He comes close, even when our hearts are cold or unsure.
The miracle was not just about fish—it was about grace.
The overflowing nets weren’t a reward for faith—they were an act of kindness and power meant to awaken Peter’s heart. It was grace that met him where he was and revealed a deeper call.
Jesus uses few words—but they change everything.
“Do not be afraid.” “Follow me.” Jesus doesn’t argue or explain—he simply invites. The same voice that calmed the sea calms Peter’s fear and calls him into purpose.
Discipleship begins with belonging.
Peter didn’t believe everything before he followed. He followed because he experienced the presence, kindness, and authority of Jesus. He belonged before he understood it all. That’s how Jesus works with us, too.
Application Questions:
- Who in your life needs to know they belong before they believe? How can you meet someone where they are this week and show them the love of Christ?
- Where is Jesus stepping into your everyday life right now? Are you open to seeing him in the ordinary or in your “boat,” like Peter?
- Have you ever experienced grace in a way that spoke your language? What did that teach you about God’s heart?
