Sermon Title: “Rock Collectors or Living Stones

Series: Summer School

Preacher: Rev. Matt Penny

Date: Sunday, July 5, 2025

Scripture: Joshua 4

Big Idea:

God wants to turn our legacy from being rock collectors to living stones. God didn’t just bring Israel out of the wilderness, He brought them into something new. The question isn’t just whether we’re alive, but whether we’re living as people shaped by what God has done. Will we merely collect spiritual moments like souvenirs, or will we become living stones who carry the story forward?

Key Points:

1. God’s presence goes first.

The ark led the way into the Jordan. True movement forward happens when we follow God’s presence, not just our plans.

2. God’s people participate in the miracle.

The priests stepped into the water before it stopped flowing. Sometimes God’s power is revealed only when we move forward in faith.

3. God’s story is meant to be passed on.

The stones weren’t just for show. They were set up as a memorial—so the next generation would ask, “What do these stones mean?” Our obedience now helps others encounter God later.

Application Questions:

  • Are you following God’s presence or just going through spiritual motions?
  • What step of faith might God be asking you to take—before the waters part?
  • What are the “stones” in your life that mark God’s work—and are you sharing those stories?
