Big Idea

Joy begins not with our circumstances but with the awareness that God is with us, even in the silence, even in the waiting. We experience joy when we realize God has never left us.

Key Points

  1. Long Seasons of Silence Can Still Be Sacred
Zechariah and Elizabeth were faithful even after decades of disappointment. They kept showing up. This teaches us that God’s silence doesn’t equal God’s absence.
  2. God’s Presence Doesn’t Depend on Our Feelings
Even when we don’t feel God, He is still near. Advent reminds us that even when we can’t feel it, God is present.
  3. Joy Often Arrives Quietly in the Middle of Our Faithfulness
Joy doesn’t always come with fireworks, it often comes when we’re simply being faithful, doing what we’ve always done, like Zechariah in the temple.
  4. Sometimes We Miss Joy Because We’ve Grown Numb
Zechariah’s disbelief shows how disappointment can harden us. Joy requires a heart open enough to believe again.

Application Questions

  • Where in my life have I mistaken God’s silence for His absence?
  • How can I keep showing up in faith even when my prayers feel unanswered?
  • Am I open to God surprising me with joy, even when I least expect it?
  • What spiritual practices help me stay aware of God’s presence?
