Sermon Title: The Case of the Titleist That Went Too Far.
Series: Summer School
Preacher: Rev. Dr. Brian Ebel
Date: Sunday, June 22, 2025
Scriptures: Luke 22:1-6
Big Idea:
Dealing with anger is hard. It’s also the reason why we go from close to Jesus, to far from Jesus. When we’re angry we can realize that we don’t decide what happens to us…we simply choose how to respond.
Key Points:
- Anger doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. Anger is part of being human, but it’s not the foundation for a Christ-centered life. Scripture reminds us to be slow to anger because human anger often leads us away from God’s purposes.
- Belief and behavior must go hand-in-hand. Like riding a bike with only one pedal, our faith falters if we focus only on belief or only on behavior. James challenges us to be doers of the word—not just hearers—and let our faith shape our actions.
- Scripture is a mirror for self-examination. God’s word shows us where we need to grow. It confronts pride, sarcasm, judgment, and passive aggression—not to shame us, but to invite us into transformation and wholeness.
Reflection & Application:
- What usually triggers your anger?
- When was the last time you let anger steer your response?
- What belief lies underneath your reactions?
- How can Scripture become more central in helping you respond with grace?
