Sermon Series: Rhythm

Rev. Dr. Stephen Martyn

John 6:1-7

Big Idea: Prayer and fasting are rhythms that move us beyond self-reliance and into deep trust in God’s provision, guidance, and transformative work in our lives.

Key Points:

1. Prayer and Fasting Reveal What’s in Our Hearts

“Jesus said to Philip, ‘Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?’ He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do.” (John 6:5-6)

  • Just as Philip relied on logic rather than faith, we often lean on our own understanding.
  • Jesus’ questions and tests are meant to open our hearts, revealing where we truly place our trust.
  • What situations in your life are exposing your need to trust God more?

2. Prayer Aligns Us with God’s Perspective

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not be wise in your own eyes.” (Proverbs 3:5)

  • God sees the entire picture of our lives—every challenge, every joy, every unknown.
  • Prayer is not just about talking to God; it’s about listening and receiving His guidance.
  • Are you making space for God’s voice, or are you consumed by your own thoughts and plans?

3. Fasting Loosens Our Attachments and Refocuses Our Hearts

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

  • Fasting is not just about giving something up—it’s about creating room to receive from God.
  • It helps us detach from distractions and lean into the true source of life.
  • What might you need to release in order to draw closer to God?

Application Questions:

  • Where in your life is God testing and stretching your faith?
  • How can you cultivate a rhythm of prayer that includes both speaking and listening?
  • What could you fast from to create space for deeper dependence on God?

Call to Action:

Commit to the rhythm of prayer and fasting—setting aside intentional time to seek God, listen for His voice, and trust in His provision.
